Maui is located at approximately 21° north of the equator in a small island group that is the most isolated land in the world. The nearest land mass to Hawaii is San Francisco, approximately 2,400 miles away. Of the total of more than 100 islands in Hawaii, eight are considered major islands-Ni'ihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Lanai, Kaho'olawe, and the Big Island of Hawaii - only seven are inhabited.
Maui has no navigatable rivers, but there are hundreds of streams. The only natural body of water is the 40-acre Kanaha Pond, a major bird sanctuary near the airport in Kahului. Puu Ulaula at the summit of Haleakala is 10,023 feet; second highest is Puu Kukui in the West Maui mountains, 5,788 feet.

With 120 miles of coastline, Maui boasts over 30 miles of beautiful beaches. On these world famous shores you'll find white, black and red sand beaches, renowned surfing and windsurfing spots as well as some of the best beaches in the world to simply swim, snorkel and sunbathe. Many are easily accessible beach parks with lifeguards, picnic facilities and restrooms. Others are undeveloped, "secret spots" found off the beaten path. Maui has dozens of fabulous beaches to satisfy everyone's tastes. There are long, undeveloped sandy beaches, family-oriented beaches with lifeguards to protect you, like Kama'ole I, Kama'ole II, and Kama'ole III, as well as developed beaches with high-rise hotels right along the shore, like Ka'anapali Beach. Maui also is home to not one but two of the world's best windsurfing beaches, Kanaha Beach Park and Ho'okipa Beach Park.
